At only halfway through the year and the US Army desertion and AWOL numbers are at last years total. The war and stop-loss polices are likely to blame according to Army researchers. The last fiscal year (October 1 through September 30 2004) the Army reported just 2,723 deserters. At July 1, 2005, the number is already at 2,518 desertions.
