The exposed female breast of "Spirit of Justice" has been restored after over three years of banishment. Former Attorney General John D. Ashcroft deemed the female human figure as “dirty” “pornographic” and “embarrassing.” After his departure, the statue has now been restored to its original artistic intentions. The statue was covered in 2002 at a coast of $8,000. The sculptures were created by Prix de Rome winner C. Paul Jennewein, and cost U.S. taxpayers a total of $7,275 when they were commissioned in 1933. The statues have stood in the Great Hall since the Justice Department headquarters building opened in 1936.
